#INDO215: Dayak work board with intricate and bold figurative carving. Work boards were used by the Dayak as work surfaces while sitting cross-legged on the floor, while beading, carving or weaving rattan. The front of the boards are intricately carved with traditional Dayak imagery to ward off bad spirits, and seen while hanging on the wall. This work board has a very strong reversible image that can be read either direction. One direction shows a large fanged face with round eyes and Aso figures at the sides of the mouth while the other direction shows a fierce bat like full body and head image with Aso for the ears. The custom base is reversible to show the image in either direction. The overall piece has a good dark patina from age and use, and the back shows signs of use and tool marks. 23 ½” tall by 9” wide, 19th or early 20th century, Borneo, Indonesia. …$6500.
