#OC224: Solomon Island figural staff with shell inlay. This well carved staff depicts a figure and two snakes. The figure is biting one snake as the second snake bites the figure on the ankle. Most likely this represents a proverb or story, but I know not the meaning. The red colored wood has a nice patina from age and handling, and the black of the figure and one snake is done with the
traditional black pitch or resin. The mother of pearl inlay is well done and intricate, with the snakes having small red beads for eyes.

Early 20th century, 40” tall by 2 3/4 “ wide mounted on a custom
metal base…….$2200.00
