Rare shield from the highland mountains of Laos and Vietnam. This unusual shield is made by the Katu tribe which I believe fall into the broad category of Montagnard peoples. The shield is made of wood, and reenforced with a rattan edge and bindings. The surface is lacquered black with inset decoration of silver foil. This shield may be more of a ceremonial dance shield as it is usually seen being danced at the large water buffalo sacrifice rituals. Previously in the collection of Tad Dale, New Mexico. 19 3/4" diameter. Late 19th or early 20th century, Vietnam or Laos. $3500.00
