AS625: Kuki Naga Dao

An unusual and rare small Naga Dao from the Kuki peoples of Northeast India, Assam and Nagaland. P.S Rawson in his book The Indian Sword suggests that small Dao were used to kill the enemy after they were wounded from spears and larger weapons. The small size and unusual form must have had some use and meaning within the culture for ceremony and / or battle. The bronze handle is directly cast onto the very thick steel blade.    

16.5 inches overall with a 12 inch blade that is 5/8 at the back edge. 19th century, Northeast India, Assam and Nagaland.
